Address by the Head of Luhansk Region, Oleksiy Kharchenko, on the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II 1939-1945

The Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945 is a reminder that the bloodiest crime against humanity in history began through a conspiracy between two totalitarian regimes, the Nazi and the Soviet, and aimed to occupy neighboring European states.

All this, as well as the tacit reluctance of the most powerful world players to resist the aggressors, identifies it with the modern Russian-Ukrainian war.

Today we turn to our shared memory to honor everyone who fought against Nazism and won.

Then, more than 200,000 residents of the Luhansk region went to the front. The 395th Rifle Division was formed from miners from Donbas.

214 Luhansk residents were awarded the highest state awards for their feat in World War II.

The occupation of Luhansk Region by the Nazis lasted from July 1942 to September 4, 1943. During this time, about 100,000 residents of the region were killed and almost 70,000 were deported to Germany.

80 years after those events, our cities and villages are again occupied by the Nazis, but now by the Russians.

Unfortunately, in 2014, the world did not realize that a full-scale war had already begun...

Luhansk region was the first to meet the enemy. Thousands of civilians took up arms, joining the ranks of volunteer formations and the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Currently, the Defense Forces already have units formed from our compatriots: the 24th Separate Assault Regiment "Aidar"; the 53rd Separate Rifle Brigade; the 111th Tactical Brigade; the 18th Slavic Brigade of the National Police of Ukraine and the Joint Assault Brigade of the National Police of Ukraine "Lyut".

Dozens of natives of the region received the title of "Hero of Ukraine" for defending their country, including posthumously.

Today we bow our heads to their feat and the victory of their grandfathers, who endured during the years of World War II. And we express our boundless gratitude to the modern Defenders of Ukraine.

We persevered and proved our ability to resist Russian aggression and defeat the Muscovites, despite their numerical superiority.

Today, Ukraine effectively deters the enemy thanks to efforts on the military, diplomatic, and informational fronts, as well as powerful international assistance.

We are sure: he who has justice on his side, who defends his land, always wins. The memory of the terrible price that the Ukrainian people paid for the victory over Nazism in World War II makes us stronger.

Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!
